Living Small

Some of you have been asking about our house. Here it is. Some say they live large; we like to say we live small. About 900 sq.ft. small for the three of us. Our condo back in the States is only about 1500 sq. ft. and we thought that was pushing it. But in Sydney, we have the luxury of paying twice as much for almost half the space. Jealous?

In all honesty, I don’t feel very cramped. I have this theory that if you are annoyed with someone you live with, it doesn’t matter how big your house is, you still want to get away! The hardest part is sharing one bathroom between the three of us. Weekdays are fine, but Saturday and Sunday mornings require some juggling. High ceilings and the shotgun-style layout help keep the space open.

Hmm…we could use some artwork for these walls!

kitchen, renovated kitchen, victorian new kitchenI do love this kitchen and the Carrara marble countertops and tall windows. The whole place was recently remodeled, so walls, countertops, appliances, and lights are all new. Floors were refinished then too. In Australia, rentals don’t typically come with kitchen and laundry appliances. We bought a fridge and washing machine but lucked out with the others.

stairs, renovated stairs

Bedrooms are upstairs with a terrace off the master. You can probably tell by looking that these stairs are steep! And they don’t feel very good when you fall down them. (I’m saying for a friend.) We have two fireplaces, both non-functioning, but I don’t think we’d use them that much anyway. Mantels coming later in the year.

minimalism, living small, minimalist living room, live smallIt’s funny; I make a living writing about big beautiful homes. It’s always a challenge not to get house envy. One thing I know for certain: Someone will always have a better/bigger/nicer house than you, no matter how much time/money/energy you put in. You have to go with what makes you happy. I do like this little place, though. It feels very “us” and has a great breeze when the windows are open.
