Dolphins in Milford Sound

Our New Zealand trip was the perfect mix of pre-planned activities and spontaneous adventures. Isn’t it hard to nail that balance? We mostly end up overdoing it, but not this time! We booked a last minute cruise on Milford Sound and it was super deluxe. If you haven’t seen those photos yet, click here.  During the ride, one of the crew spotted dolphins playing near the boat, so the captain drove closer to see if they’d “have a play” with us and THEY DID. It was, by far, one of the most incredible moments of my life. I’d never seen them that close in the wild before. One of the crew told us we were “very lucky because this never happens.” And I was like, “Yeah, I feel pretty lucky right now!” She said there aren’t any resident ones in the Sound and that this group just happened to swim in for the day.

It’s pretty hard to capture photos of dolphins swimming and jumping while I’m on a moving boat and only using my iPhone, but I did what I could! They were swimming under the boat (which was moving fast!) and then jumping out in front before diving back under.
